All 17 Heart of Georgia Altamaha counties are nonmetro, making this the only fully rural region in either Georgia or South Carolina in these guides, and every county carries primary care and mental health shortage designations. For an Augusta University DNP nurse practitioner student in Dublin, Vidalia, Jesup or Swainsboro, that means a few hospitals, a strong health center network and a preceptor search that has to cover real distance. Seventeen counties, no metro area
The Heart of Georgia Altamaha Regional Commission covers Appling, Bleckley, Candler, Dodge, Emanuel, Evans, Jeff Davis, Johnson, Laurens, Montgomery, Tattnall, Telfair, Toombs, Treutlen, Wayne, Wheeler and Wilcox counties. They held 299,714 people in 2025, only 1.8 percent more than in 2020. No town reaches 17,000: Dublin has 16,565, Vidalia 10,885, Jesup 10,301 and Swainsboro 7,436, and Laurens, at 51,041, is the largest county.
Swainsboro, roughly 70 driving miles from downtown Augusta, is the nearest anchor, closer to campus than Athens or Macon. Vidalia and Dublin sit about 100 and 105 miles out, Baxley and Eastman about 130, and Jesup about 150.
Hospitals here publish no NP student process
Research found no NP student page for any of the region's main hospitals. Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin belongs to HCA Healthcare's South Atlantic Division; its site could not be read from the research location, and no archived student page turned up. Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia, a hospital authority, and the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin showed no NP or APRN student page in a September 2026 check.
A missing page is not a closed door, but it means requests travel through your course faculty and the school's agreements instead of a public portal. AGACNP students, whose options here center on a handful of hospitals, should start that path earliest. Rural critical access hospitals across the region were not researched; ask your faculty about any you are considering.
Health centers carry primary care
HRSA counts 32 health center service sites in the region. East Georgia Healthcare Center runs 19 of them, in Baxley, Claxton, Metter, Mount Vernon, Reidsville, Soperton, Swainsboro, Twin City and Vidalia. CareConnect Health has four in Alamo, Cochran, Eastman and Rochelle; Community Health Care Systems four in Dublin, McRae-Helena and Wrightsville; the Georgia Department of Community Health four in Metter, Reidsville and Vidalia; and Diversity Health Center one in Jesup.
Seven sites are school-based and six are mobile units; Jeff Davis County has none. For FNP and PNP students these clinics are the likeliest source of a steady primary care panel close to home, provided the clinic has room to host a learner that term.
Shortage scores in all 17 counties
Telfair County's low-income primary care designation scores 22, the highest in the region. Bleckley scores 21, Evans 21 with withdrawal proposed, and Emanuel, Montgomery, Toombs and Wayne 20. Emanuel, Jeff Davis, Johnson, Treutlen, Wheeler and Wilcox are whole-county geographic shortage areas, and HRSA lists ten correctional facility designations for primary care across the counties.
On the mental health side, all 17 counties are designated in full as geographic shortage areas. The Ogeechee catchment covering Emanuel scores 18; the Pineland catchment for Appling, Candler, Evans, Jeff Davis, Tattnall, Toombs and Wayne scores 15; and a Community Service Board of Middle Georgia catchment reaches nine counties including Laurens, Dodge and Telfair. Any address in these counties satisfies Augusta University's residence requirement, which keeps NP and certificate students inside Georgia or South Carolina because instructors travel to see each student, preceptor and clinical site; the two-state rule has the wording. Students near Eastman or Cochran can also look toward middle Georgia, and those around Swainsboro toward Augusta and the CSRA.

Can I complete AGACNP hours at a rural hospital near Vidalia or Dublin?
Possibly. The AGACNP practice courses build toward complex urgent, emergent and rapidly changing adult care, so the unit and caseload matter as much as the town. Meadows Regional and Fairview Park publish no NP student process, and Augusta University does not publish site requirements, so confirm fit with your course faculty early.
Does the Carl Vinson VA in Dublin take Augusta University NP students?
No NP student page was found for the Dublin VA. A separate VA page, for the spinal cord injury center in Augusta, says that center is affiliated with Augusta University's health care training programs, naming the College of Nursing. That page speaks for the Augusta center only, so ask your course faculty about Dublin.
Where can a PMHNP student find group experience in such a small region?
PMHNP Practice II and III each ask for group work: a group for children or teens and a psychotherapy group for adults. With mental health shortages designated countywide, group programs are few, so we look across all three catchments, the behavioral health practices in Dublin and Vidalia, and settings just over the region's edge.
I live in Jesup. Should I also look toward the coast?
Wayne County is part of this region, and Jesup is about 150 miles from Augusta. Diversity Health Center has a site in Jesup, and Wayne's low-income primary care designation scores 20. Jesup students may also weigh coastal practices; the coastal Georgia guide covers them.
