The Midlands: NP clinicals from North Augusta and Aiken to Columbia
The Midlands starts on the far bank of the Savannah River, so a student in North Augusta or Aiken lives nearer the Augusta University Health Sciences campus than most of Georgia does. Its twelve counties hold about 1.59 million people, the Columbia hospital cluster and 56 community health center sites. Its biggest system tightly limits outside students, so a good search reaches well past it.

Twelve counties across the Savannah River
The Midlands grouping takes in Aiken, Barnwell, Chester, Edgefield, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lancaster, Lexington, Newberry, Richland, Saluda and York counties, home to 1,591,451 people in 2025. State documents indexed by search say South Carolina's health department stopped reporting by region in February 2026, which we could not confirm, so treat the grouping as a working map.
Columbia (147,035 residents) leads Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Aiken, North Augusta and Lexington. By road from downtown Augusta the region runs roughly 4 miles to North Augusta, 20 to Aiken, 80 to Columbia and 140 to Rock Hill. Only Barnwell and Newberry counties are nonmetro, with 3.8% of residents.
Columbia's hospitals and their student pages
Prisma Health operates Richland, Baptist and Baptist Parkridge hospitals in Columbia. An archived copy of its graduate nursing placement page, dated August 29, 2025, admits Prisma employees with a year or more of service and graduate nursing students of Clemson University or the University of South Carolina. It also requires a school with a current Prisma affiliation and weighs new school agreements only where a workforce need exists.
Lexington Health, the Lexington Medical Center network's name since August 8, 2025, describes a University of South Carolina teaching partnership on its academics site and posts no route for NP students from other schools. MUSC Health's two Columbia medical centers and Kershaw Medical Center in Camden, and Aiken Regional Medical Centers, had no NP student page in our September 2026 research.
Health centers from Aiken to Winnsboro
HRSA lists 56 active health center sites here, four school-based and three mobile. Eau Claire Cooperative Health Center runs 19 in Columbia, West Columbia, Newberry, Winnsboro and smaller towns. Near the river, Low Country Health Care System has seven sites across Aiken and Barnwell counties, Rural Health Services seven in Aiken and Clearwater, and Neighborhood Improvement Project two in Aiken. Community Medicine Foundation and Affinity Health Center serve Rock Hill and York County. Edgefield is the one Midlands county with no health center site.
Where the shortage designations fall
Each Midlands county carries a primary care shortage designation. Barnwell, Chester, Edgefield, Fairfield, Kershaw and Saluda qualify county-wide by geography, while Aiken, Newberry and Richland qualify for their low-income residents; Newberry's score of 18 is the region's highest.
Psychiatric gaps run deeper. Eight counties, Aiken and Edgefield among them, are whole-county geographic mental health shortage areas, and high needs areas spanning Aiken and Barnwell and covering South Lexington each score 19. The scores measure unmet need, not which clinics take students, so we check every site's own rules.
Fitting Augusta University's four NP tracks to the Midlands
Augusta University asks NP and post-graduate certificate students to live in Georgia or South Carolina so faculty can reach you, your preceptor and your site (the two-state rule). For a Midlands resident that opens clinics on both banks of the river.

A multistate RN license lets your hours cross the river either way (RN license rules), and a South Carolina preceptor works under a physician practice agreement (South Carolina NP practice).

Questions Augusta University students ask
Can I live in North Augusta and do clinical hours in Augusta, Georgia?
The published rule accepts either state as home and says nothing against training across the river. For hours at a Georgia site, Georgia's Board of Nursing expects a Georgia or multistate compact license, so a South Carolina multistate license works and a single-state one does not. Your Georgia preceptor would practice under a protocol agreement with a delegating physician.
Does Prisma Health in Columbia accept Augusta University NP students?
Prisma's archived graduate nursing page names only its own employees with a year of service and Clemson University or University of South Carolina students, and it wants the student's school already affiliated with Prisma. New school agreements depend on a workforce need. If you work for Prisma, raise it with your course faculty; otherwise plan around other Columbia settings.
Is Edgefield County a hard place to find a primary care preceptor?
On paper it is one of the thinner spots. HRSA designates all of Edgefield County a geographic primary care shortage area, scored 11, and lists no health center site inside it. For an Edgefield student our search widens to Aiken, North Augusta and the Georgia side of the river.
Does this guide cover Rock Hill and Fort Mill?
Yes. York and Lancaster counties fall in the Midlands grouping, though Rock Hill is about 140 driving miles from downtown Augusta. Augusta University does not publish how far faculty travel for site visits, so confirm a distant site with your course faculty before you commit.
