The Upstate is South Carolina's most populous region, 1.67 million people in eleven counties, and its southern edge at McCormick and Greenwood lies closer to Augusta than Columbia does. Two of its hospital systems reserve NP rotations for their own staff and named in-state universities, so health centers and independent practices carry much of an Augusta University student's search.

From McCormick to the mountains

The Upstate grouping covers Abbeville, Anderson, Cherokee, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Oconee, Pickens, Spartanburg and Union counties. Greenville County alone holds 583,125 of the region's 1,669,237 people, and growth from 2020 to 2025 reached 9.7%, the fastest of South Carolina's four regions.

Driving distances from downtown Augusta run roughly 40 miles to McCormick, 60 to Greenwood, 95 to Anderson, 110 to Greenville and 125 to Spartanburg. Abbeville, Cherokee, Greenwood, McCormick and Oconee are nonmetro, holding 14.8% of residents.

Each hospital system's own rules for students

Four of the five big Upstate systems publish student rules, each applying to every school alike. None names Augusta University; Prisma and AnMed name only their in-state partner schools.

Prisma Health (Greenville Memorial, Greer Memorial, Patewood, Hillcrest, Oconee Memorial and others): an archived August 29, 2025 copy of its graduate nursing page takes Prisma employees with a year of service or Clemson and University of South Carolina graduate students, needs a school Prisma already works with, and adds school agreements only for a workforce need. Its NP preceptors have held an APRN license two years or more.
AnMed (Anderson and Pickens): an archived April 21, 2026 copy of its NP page considers only AnMed employees and Anderson University and Clemson University students, sets term deadlines of October 1, February 1 and May 1, and routes all contact through its placement coordinator.
Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (Spartanburg, Pelham in Greer, Union): its workforce development page, archived February 22, 2026, places nurse practitioner students once the school signs an affiliation agreement with the system, with academic coordinators filing requests in myClinicalExchange.
Self Regional Healthcare (Greenwood): its onboarding policy, revised January 13, 2026, marks NP requests "Must find provider", so by Self Regional's own rule a provider is named before a request for its site goes in, two to three weeks ahead of the start date.

Health centers and school-based sites

HRSA's September 2026 file counts 77 health center service sites in the Upstate, 27 of them in schools and 10 on mobile units, more school-based sites than any other South Carolina region. ReGenesis Health Care runs 43, from Spartanburg and Gaffney to Union, Inman and Greenville. Carolina Health Centers runs 13 across Greenwood, Abbeville, McCormick, Clinton and Ware Shoals, the part of the Upstate nearest Augusta. New Horizon Family Health Services has nine around Greenville, Rosa Clark Medical Clinic six in Oconee County, and Foothills Community Health Care five in Anderson, Clemson and Easley.

Shortage areas, county by county

Every Upstate county is a whole-county geographic mental health shortage area. The Cherokee, Spartanburg and Union area, designated March 31, 2026, scores 18.

Primary care designations follow income: nine counties are low-income shortage areas, led by McCormick (19), Cherokee (18), Laurens (17) and Greenwood (16), while Union is a high needs geographic area and HRSA lists 13 rural health clinic designations.

The College of Nursing's residence rule covers the whole Upstate, since faculty visits to you, your preceptor and your site reach South Carolina too (the two-state rule). Your preceptor here practices under a physician practice agreement (South Carolina NP practice), and a multistate RN license covers you (license rules).

Questions Augusta University students ask

Can an Augusta University NP student rotate at AnMed in Anderson?

AnMed's archived NP placement page considers only AnMed employees and Anderson University or Clemson University students. Unless you work there, look instead at other Anderson County settings, such as Foothills Community Health Care sites and independent practices. An AnMed employee applies through AnMed's own process by its term deadline.

What does Self Regional's "Must find provider" note mean?

It is Self Regional Healthcare's own instruction for NP requests at its Greenwood hospital. Read plainly, a willing provider comes first and the placement request follows. Greenwood sits about 60 driving miles from downtown Augusta, closer than Columbia, which makes it practical for students living near McCormick, Abbeville or Edgefield.

Does Spartanburg Regional take nurse practitioner students?

Its archived February 2026 workforce page names nurse practitioner among the programs it places. A signed school-to-system agreement comes before any request, and academic coordinators then submit through myClinicalExchange. The page does not list which schools hold agreements, so ask your course faculty whether one covers Augusta University.

Is it hard to find a psychiatric preceptor in the Upstate?

Demand is high: HRSA lists every county as a geographic mental health shortage area, so psychiatric practices are stretched. We approach them early and confirm they can provide the group sessions for children or adolescents and for adults that NURS 8345 and NURS 8348 call for.
