Gainesville and the Georgia Mountains for Augusta University NP students
The 12 Georgia Mountains counties grew 11.5% in five years, and nearly 45% of their residents live in nonmetro counties. One hospital system, Northeast Georgia Health System, and one health center network, MedLink Georgia, shape most of the clinical map, so a preceptor search here reaches well beyond both.

Twelve counties, from Hall to the Blue Ridge
The Georgia Mountains Regional Commission covers Banks, Dawson, Franklin, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union and White counties: 540,951 people in July 2025, up 11.5% on 2020, the second-fastest growth among the 11 Georgia regions in these guides after Athens and the northeast. Hall alone holds 226,568, over two residents in five.
Gainesville (49,221) is the only sizable city, followed by Flowery Branch, Toccoa, Dahlonega, Oakwood and Cornelia, and it sits roughly 140 driving miles from downtown Augusta. Only Dawson, Hall and Lumpkin are metro under the USDA's 2023 codes. The other nine are nonmetro, and Rabun and Towns sit in the most remote class, with an urban population under 5,000 and no bordering metro county.
Northeast Georgia Health System and St. Mary's Sacred Heart
Northeast Georgia Health System runs NGMC Gainesville, NGMC Braselton, NGMC Lumpkin in Dahlonega and NGMC Habersham in Demorest, the former Habersham Medical Center, which joined on July 1, 2023, along with Laurelwood, its behavioral health hospital in Gainesville. Its ACEMAPP welcome page lists rotations for advanced practice providers but sets out no APP-specific steps, so the details of an NP request are confirmed with NGHS before a plan depends on them.
What NGHS does publish is firm. Undergraduate nursing students may not pre-arrange cohorts or practicums outside their school coordinators, and their requests are due March 15 for summer, June 15 for fall and October 15 for spring, with nothing accepted outside those dates. NGHS employees enrolled in a program still go through ACEMAPP as students, though they skip the background check and drug screen, and NGHS signs no requirement waivers.
In Lavonia, St. Mary's Sacred Heart Hospital belongs to St. Mary's Health Care System, part of Trinity Health; our research found no NP student page for it, so treat it as a landmark rather than a mapped route.
MedLink Georgia and the health center map
HRSA's September 2026 file shows 22 health center service sites in the region, two of them school-based and none mobile. MedLink Georgia runs 19, in Clayton, Cleveland, Commerce, Demorest, Gainesville, Hartwell, Royston, Suches and Toccoa. Georgia Highlands Medical Service adds sites in Buford and Dawsonville, and Georgia Mountains Health Services one in Dahlonega. Towns County has none.
Because one network holds most sites, a mountain FNP or PNP search that stops at health centers runs out of options quickly. Independent family practices in Gainesville, Toccoa, Cornelia and Blairsville carry the rest, and each is confirmed for your course before its name goes to your faculty.
Shortage designations from Hall County to Towns
In HRSA's primary care file, 11 of the 12 counties are designated in full for their low-income residents; Dawson alone has no geographic or population designation. Franklin scores highest at 18, Banks, Hart, Stephens and Union follow at 17, and Hall's designation, scored 14, is proposed for withdrawal.
For mental health, a single low-income designation that HRSA names for Avita Community Partners covers all 12 counties with a score of 16. Laurelwood, NGHS's behavioral health hospital in Gainesville, is the one psychiatric hospital our research names in the region. Plan for the PMHNP search to take longest here, since the child and adult groups required in NURS 8345 and NURS 8348 narrow it further.

A mountain address qualifies under Augusta University's residence requirement, which keeps NP and certificate students in Georgia or South Carolina so instructors can reach them, their preceptors and their sites (the residence rule). Does Northeast Georgia Health System publish an NP student process?
Its ACEMAPP welcome page lists advanced practice provider rotations but gives no APP-specific steps or dates. The deadlines and the no-pre-arranging rule it does publish are written for undergraduate cohorts and practicums, so they should not be read as NP rules. Your placement advisor confirms NGHS's current APP requirements before any plan relies on them.
Where can a PMHNP student look in the Georgia Mountains?
Start with Avita Community Partners, the organization named in the region's mental health shortage designation, then private psychiatric practices around Gainesville and Laurelwood, NGHS's behavioral health hospital, through NGHS's process. Ask every candidate early whether groups for children or adolescents and adults run on the days you would attend.
If I live in Hart or Stephens County, can I train in the South Carolina Upstate?
South Carolina is inside Augusta University's two-state area, so an Upstate practice can fit. Its biggest systems are narrow, though: AnMed considers only its own staff and Anderson University or Clemson students, and Prisma takes its own team members or Clemson and USC students unless there is a workforce need. Which counties in the region have no community health center site?
Only Towns County has no HRSA health center service site. MedLink Georgia reaches Rabun through its Clayton site and Union through Suches, while Georgia Highlands serves Dawson from Dawsonville. Towns residents look to practices in neighboring counties, or to independent practices at home.
How remote are the far north counties?
The USDA's 2023 codes put Rabun and Towns in their most rural class, and Stephens, home to Toccoa, is also nonmetro with no metro county beside it. Blairsville, in Union County, is farther from the city of Augusta than Gainesville, which matters for faculty visits and for building a preceptor list within a sensible drive.
