Choosing a placement service as an Augusta University student

Preceptors in Georgia or South Carolina only
NP and certificate students at Augusta University must reside in Georgia or South Carolina, a rule the College of Nursing links to instructors visiting you, your preceptor and your clinical site. Its certificate page describes clinical experiences at ambulatory practices in the same two states. A preceptor elsewhere, however skilled, does not fit that structure.
So ask any service first where its proposed preceptors practice. The answer should be a town in Georgia or South Carolina within a drive you can make on clinic days, and near enough for your instructor to visit. The Georgia or South Carolina rule guide covers moves and border towns.
The right patients for each course
A specialty label is not a match. Ask how the service fits a preceptor to a course number. For FNP students the patient mix shifts each term: adult primary care in NURS 8312, pediatrics from infancy through adolescence in NURS 8315, then older adults with their families in NURS 8318. AGACNP courses need acute care, PNP courses pediatric primary care, and PMHNP Practice II and III add group and supervision requirements.
NURS 9192 asks you to work across the whole advanced practice role with a preceptor beside you, which calls for a broad practice. A service that asks only for your specialty and ZIP code has skipped the question your clinical grade depends on. The PNP practice courses guide shows how much the setting matters in a single track.
License checks under both states' rules
Ask exactly which checks the service runs, who runs them and when. The right answer is all of these, before a name is sent to you.
- Georgia: the preceptor holds a Georgia or multistate license, and clinical instruction in APRN programs comes from a nurse with Georgia APRN authorization, as the Board of Nursing states.
- Georgia practice: a Georgia NP works under a nurse protocol agreement signed with a delegating physician, and some site forms ask for that physician.
- South Carolina: the NP's written practice agreement with a physician is current and covers the medical aspects of care, including prescribing.
- Your own license: valid where the clinical takes place. Georgia and South Carolina are both compact states for RN licenses, and neither has enacted the APRN Compact.
Augusta University does not publish preceptor qualifications beyond these state rules, so anything your faculty require on top should be part of the check. See who can precept for what is public.
Paperwork your faculty and the site will ask for
Augusta University does not publish its NP preceptor forms, so a strong service asks what your course faculty request and builds each packet to that list rather than sending a generic profile. Expect preceptor license and certification details, the practice setting and patient mix, a planned schedule and confirmation that the preceptor will host a faculty visit.
The site has its own list. Under CON16 you complete the required university and clinical affiliate paperwork ahead of each rotation, possibly including confidentiality and policy acknowledgment agreements, a records release and a Student Applied Learning Experience Agreement, and a site can add requirements at your expense. Health systems also insist on a school-level affiliation agreement before a student's first day, which the clinical agreements guide explains.
Replacement promises: read the fine print
Preceptors leave for ordinary reasons: a new job, a leave, a practice that stops taking students. What matters is what happens next. Ask whether a replacement search is part of the service, whether it covers the same course and the hours still owed, how soon it starts and whether it carries an extra fee, and get each answer in writing.
Be cautious with any service that promises a placement, a start date or approval. Preceptors decide for themselves, sites run their own review of your background check and drug screen, and your faculty oversee the course. An honest service commits to effort, speed and a clear plan B.
Timelines that match the site and the term
Lead times depend on where you train, and health systems publish their own. Northside sets a 30-day compliance lead, Atrium Health Floyd a three-month one, Wellstar closes spring applications on November 15, and Emory cautions that a new school agreement may take several months. Independent practices and health centers can often move faster once your compliance items are current.
Your calendar matters as well. Augusta University's plans count 15-week semesters, but summer 2027 offers only 10- or 11-week terms, so a late summer start leaves little slack. A service that quotes a fixed turnaround without asking about the site type, the course and the term is guessing.

What should a placement service ask me first?
Your track, the course number and term, your home ZIP code, your RN license type, any employer limits and any leads you already have. Those details decide the patient mix, the state rules that apply and how far you can travel. A service that skips the course number or your license is matching blind.
Can a service get me into a hospital that uses ACEMAPP?
A service can prepare you, but the hospital's process decides. Wellstar, Piedmont, Emory and Northside all route students through ACEMAPP, and each wants an affiliation agreement with the school in place first. A good service tells you which systems suit your timing and steers the search toward sites that can take you in time.
How should I compare prices between services?
Compare what the fee covers, not just the figure: course matching, license and practice agreement checks, faculty and site paperwork, a replacement search and support through the term. Can a service help once my course has started?
Yes, though the options narrow as the weeks pass. A service can search for a first or second preceptor mid-term, but site onboarding still takes time, and your course faculty need to know about any new preceptor before you begin. Move quickly, and bring faculty a named option rather than an open problem.
