Albany, Thomasville and Southwest Georgia Preceptors for Augusta University NP Students
Southwest Georgia's 14 counties lie at the far end of the state from Augusta University's Health Sciences campus, yet an address in Albany, Thomasville or Moultrie meets the program's residence rule in full. Phoebe Putney and Archbold anchor the hospitals, most residents live in nonmetro counties, and community health centers carry much of the primary care your clinical courses need.

Fourteen counties, one city above 20,000
The Southwest Georgia Regional Commission takes in Baker, Calhoun, Colquitt, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Grady, Lee, Miller, Mitchell, Seminole, Terrell, Thomas and Worth counties. The Census Bureau's 2025 estimate counts 349,372 residents, 0.9% fewer than the 2020 base, which makes this the one Georgia region in our research that lost people over those five years.
Albany, at 66,907, is the only city above 20,000. Thomasville, Moultrie, Bainbridge and Cairo each sit between 10,000 and 19,000, and the drive from downtown Augusta runs roughly 220 miles to Albany, 250 to Thomasville and 275 to Bainbridge. USDA's 2023 codes class just four counties as metro (Dougherty, Lee, Terrell and Worth); the other ten hold 58.4% of the population.
Phoebe, Archbold and the health center networks
Phoebe Putney Health System runs Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany and Phoebe Worth Medical Center in Sylvester. Its ACEMAPP entity lists the programs it accepts, NP tracks among them, but the public tabs describe only shadowing and high school programs, and our research found no NP request process on its site.
Archbold Medical Center, based in Thomasville, spans John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital, Grady General in Cairo, Mitchell County Hospital in Camilla, Northside Behavioral Health and the Archbold Medical Group clinics. Its ACEMAPP pages post a request date for each term: spring by the previous November 15, summer by March 15, fall by June 15. Students must be fully compliant in ACEMAPP at least two weeks before starting, and Archbold employees who are students still complete student onboarding. Colquitt Regional Medical Center in Moultrie posts no NP student page.
HRSA lists 50 health center service sites here, 13 school-based and 3 mobile. Albany Area Primary Health Care runs 27 of them, from Albany and Leesburg to Camilla, Dawson, Edison, Newton and Thomasville; CareConnect Health, Primary Care of Southwest Georgia and a Donalsonville look-alike cover much of the rest. Grady and Miller counties have none. These are places NP students look; none of their pages names Augusta University.
Shortage data, specialty by specialty
Every county here falls inside a primary care Health Professional Shortage Area. Colquitt, Early, Lee, Mitchell and Terrell are whole-county geographic designations, and the remaining nine carry low-income population designations. HRSA scores the Decatur and Dougherty low-income HPSAs at 22, tied for the highest in Georgia's data, and counts eight rural health clinics among the region's facility designations.
Psychiatric care is short in all 14 counties, each one a whole-county geographic mental health HPSA. Two service areas define them: Georgia Pines, covering Colquitt, Decatur, Grady, Mitchell, Seminole and Thomas (scored 18), and the Aspire area, formerly Albany CSB, covering the other eight (scored 15).
For a student, shortage cuts both ways: a busy rural clinician offers a broad patient mix, and the same workload leaves little slack for teaching. The right match wants a student and has room for 180 or 240 hours.
What the residence rule means this far from campus
The College of Nursing's residence requirement for its NP tracks and post-graduate certificates names two states, Georgia and South Carolina, and explains itself: faculty need to reach the student, the preceptor and the clinical site. The rule names two states and no radius, so living in Dougherty or Thomas County satisfies it exactly as living in Richmond County would. The exact sentence is on the Georgia and South Carolina rule.
Visit frequency and format are not published, so ask your course faculty when each clinical course opens. What you control is readiness: a preceptor licensed for Georgia practice and a site with its agreement and onboarding in order. I live in Bainbridge. Do my clinicals have to be in Albany?
Augusta University's published rule concerns the state you live in and names no city. We search within your own driving range first: Bainbridge has Primary Care of Southwest Georgia and a Department of Community Health grantee among its health center sites, and Decatur County's low-income primary care designation is one of the two highest scored in the region.
How hard is it to find a PMHNP preceptor near Thomasville?
It takes a focused search: every county in the region is a whole-county mental health shortage area. Thomasville has Archbold's Northside Behavioral Health, and the Georgia Pines service area covers Thomas and five neighboring counties. The group requirements in the later PMHNP courses narrow the list further, which is why we check group access first.
