Columbus, LaGrange, Newnan and west central Georgia for Augusta University NP students
This guide joins two regional commissions along the Alabama line: Three Rivers, from Carrollton and Newnan down to Griffin and Thomaston, and River Valley, from Columbus east to Americus and Cordele. Columbus lies about 220 driving miles from downtown Augusta, yet Augusta University's residence rule treats a Columbus address exactly like one in Evans. Two commissions, one West Georgia market
Three Rivers brings Butts, Carroll, Coweta, Heard, Lamar, Meriwether, Pike, Spalding, Troup and Upson counties. River Valley adds Chattahoochee, Clay, Crisp, Dooly, Harris, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor and Webster; note that Macon County here is a rural River Valley county, not the city of Macon. Together they counted 929,038 residents in 2025, up 4.0 percent from 2020.
Columbus-Muscogee County, at 202,171, anchors the south; Newnan (45,867), LaGrange (34,730), Carrollton, Griffin, Villa Rica and Americus come next. Griffin is the nearest anchor to Augusta at about 150 miles. Thirteen counties are nonmetro, holding 23.6 percent of residents, and ten of them sit in River Valley, which is why Americus and Cordele feel closer to southwest Georgia than to Newnan.

Wellstar's ACEMAPP page carries details worth planning around. Its May 2023 Preceptor Confirmation Form is the only version it takes, every preceptor and every rotation gets its own application, and a student still without a preceptor names Wellstar Ambulatory as a placeholder. Starting in mid-2026 the school must handle fit testing and a hand hygiene sign-off before the first shift, flu shots must be documented for any rotation between October 1 and March 31, and Wellstar staff who rotate as students meet the full student checklist.
Wellstar posts decision dates, April 15, July 15 and December 15, and asks students not to contact it before them. Build the application around the deadline, then wait for the posted date.
Health centers, and the shortage map beneath them
HRSA lists 48 health center service sites in the 26 counties, six school-based and three mobile. CareConnect Health runs 27, from Americus, Cordele and Montezuma up to Griffin and Thomaston. Valley Healthcare System has eight in Columbus, Fortson, Lumpkin and Talbotton; Palmetto Health Council five in Barnesville, Carrollton, Senoia, Warm Springs and Zebulon; and Albany Area Primary Health Care four in Americus, Fort Gaines, Pinehurst and Vienna. Heard, Troup and Webster have no site.
Thirteen counties are whole-county geographic primary care shortage areas, from Clay and Quitman to Harris and Meriwether. Dooly's high-needs designation scores 22, the region's highest, though HRSA has proposed withdrawing it, and Spalding's low-income designation scores 21. Only Coweta and Pike have no primary care designation.
All 26 counties carry a mental health designation. The New Horizons low-income catchment around Columbus and the Middle Flint catchment around Americus and Cordele both score 18, and the Pathways catchment spans Carroll, Coweta, Heard, Meriwether and Troup.
Course by course in west central Georgia
FNP students can spread the three practice courses across the region's strengths: NURS 8312 adult primary care and NURS 8318 older adults and families at a Valley Healthcare or CareConnect site, NURS 8315 infants, children and adolescents at a family practice in Newnan, Carrollton or Columbus.
PNP students need pediatric primary care through NURS 8322, NURS 8325 and NURS 8328. Columbus and the Coweta and Carroll suburbs hold the child population, and the six school-based health center sites add school-age patients.
AGACNP students in NURS 8332, NURS 8335 and NURS 8338 have acute care at Piedmont Columbus Regional, St. Francis-Emory, Wellstar West Georgia, Wellstar Spalding, Piedmont Newnan and Tanner, each reached through its own process.
PMHNP students must log group work in NURS 8345 and NURS 8348, one group with children or teens and one adult psychotherapy group; outpatient psychiatric practices in Columbus, Newnan and LaGrange are the natural first calls. Every track then closes with 240 hours in NURS 9192, the final practicum.

Does living in Columbus, far from Augusta, change my clinicals?
Not under Augusta University's published rule, which turns on living in Georgia or South Carolina rather than distance from campus. Visit frequency and format are not spelled out anywhere Augusta University publishes, so ask your course faculty; the Georgia and South Carolina rule sets out what is published.
I live just across the Chattahoochee in Alabama. Can I enroll in an NP track?
Augusta University's pages require DNP nurse practitioner and post-graduate certificate students to reside in one of two states, Georgia or South Carolina, and Alabama is not one of them. A Columbus address would meet the rule; an Alabama one, as written, would not. Nurse Anesthesia is separate, with program clinical sites in four states.
Can I use a Wellstar LaGrange preceptor I already know?
Wellstar's process allows it. You apply in ACEMAPP by the term deadline, submit its May 2023 Preceptor Confirmation Form and file one application per preceptor. Wellstar will not host any student without a current affiliation agreement with that student's school, so confirm with your course faculty that one is in place.
Are Americus and Cordele covered here or in southwest Georgia?
Here. Sumter and Crisp counties belong to the River Valley commission, which this guide merges with Three Rivers. Many clinics there, especially CareConnect Health and Albany Area Primary Health Care sites, look toward Albany, so the southwest Georgia guide is worth reading too.
