Summer clinical terms at Augusta University
On the full-time plans, Practice II in every Augusta University DNP nurse practitioner track falls in the summer of year two, and both certificates put their second clinical course in their first summer. The plans figure those 180 hours over 15 weeks, but Augusta University's summer terms last 10 or 11, so the weekly load runs higher than in fall or spring.

Which clinical courses land in summer
Every NP track's full-time plan and both post-graduate certificates place one clinical course in summer, and nurse anesthesia places two. The table lists each with its hours and plan term.

Part-time NP plans place courses on their own four-year schedule, so check yours for which summer, if any, carries a clinical course. The first summer of the full-time NP plans holds NURS 7470 Advanced Health Assessment, a lab course with no preceptor hours. Plans count 15 weeks; summer gives you 10 or 11
The DNP plans state that clinical hours are calculated at 4:1 over 15 weeks for all semesters, summer included, and the certificate plans work on the same 15-week basis. The summer 2027 calendar offers two full-term options: a 10-week full term (May 17 through July 22) and an 11-week part of term (May 10 through August 3). The plans do not say which one each clinical course uses, so check the dates on your course listing in POUNCE when you register.
Summer also brings closures and deadlines. The calendar lists Memorial Day on May 31, Juneteenth on June 18 and a university closure on July 5, with finals on July 26 and 27 for the 10-week term. The last day to withdraw is June 22, and registration for summer opens in March, alongside fall. The academic calendar guide covers the full year.
The nurse anesthesia curriculum is the one plan that names an 11-week summer, yet its two summer practica still carry 480 and 600 hours.

These figures divide each course's hours evenly by the weeks available. They are our arithmetic, not Augusta University figures, and they assume you precept every week of the term.

For an NP student, 18 hours a week is more than two eight-hour clinic days, compared with one and a half across a 15-week term. Lose a single week to onboarding or a preceptor's vacation and a 10-week Practice II climbs to 20 hours a week.
Practice II carries the same 180 hours as Practice I. Only the calendar shrinks, so a preceptor who can offer two or three clinic days a week matters more in summer than in any other term.
Planning preceptor time for a summer course
However your program handles placement, summer rewards the student who plans in winter. These steps draw on what Augusta University and the health systems publish, plus the planning habits that keep a short term on track.
- Confirm the preceptor by early springSummer registration opens in March, and site paperwork runs on its own clock. Wellstar's ACEMAPP page, for example, sets March 30 for summer advanced practice applications, with decisions by April 15.
- Ask about vacation weeksOne week off costs you a tenth of a 10-week term. Put the preceptor's planned absences on the calendar before you commit, and agree on make-up days.
- Build in a buffer weekAim to finish a week early, so an illness or a cancelled clinic day does not leave you short when late-July finals arrive.
- Protect the eight hours before each shiftCollege of Nursing policy CON20 bars working in the eight hours before any clinical, which limits how much paid work fits around a heavy summer week.
- Keep attendance cleanUnder policy CON23, a missed clinical may mean making up a full day, arriving 15 minutes or more late can mean being asked to leave, and a third absence in a course may lead to dismissal. A short term leaves little room for any of these.
- Log hours every weekEnter hours in the tracking system as you go, so you and your faculty can see the pace by mid-June.
Practice II by track: what summer asks of the preceptor
FNP Practice II, NURS 8315, turns to infants, children and adolescents in primary health care settings, so the summer preceptor needs a steady pediatric panel. PNP Practice II, NURS 8325, stays in pediatric primary care. The FNP and PNP course guides cover both.
AGACNP Practice II, NURS 8335, is built around urgent and emergent care for adults and older adults with complex needs, and it squeezes 45 lab hours into the same short term. PMHNP Practice II, NURS 8345, opens only after a B or higher in the didactic NURS 8341 and a Satisfactory in Practice I, and it includes at least one child or adolescent group, one adult psychotherapy group, and supervision led by faculty or preceptors. If summer hours run short
The catalog allows an Incomplete grade when a student cannot finish course requirements by the end of the term for reasons beyond their control. You then have one more semester to finish before it turns into an F, and the instructor can file an extension. Whether an Incomplete suits a clinical course in your situation is your faculty's call, and the next course may depend on it: PMHNP Practice III requires a Satisfactory in Practice II.
The better route is to catch a shortfall early. If your log shows you behind by mid-June, talk to your course faculty and read behind on clinical hours for the steps to take that week. Keep the longer clock in mind too: College of Nursing policy gives DNP nurse practitioner students six consecutive years to finish, and a leave of absence does not extend it.
How we plan your summer term
Summer is the term where the preceptor's calendar decides how the course goes. Our placement desk looks for preceptors in Georgia or South Carolina with room for two or three clinic days a week from mid-May, confirms vacation dates before the match, and vets each match for Augusta University's published requirements and Georgia or South Carolina licensing. We have the site paperwork moving in spring, so your first summer week is a clinic week. For PMHNP students we confirm the site's groups keep running through June and July, and for FNP students that the practice sees enough children each week to support NURS 8315.

No. Practice II carries 180 clinical hours in every NP track whichever term it falls in, and the certificate Practice II courses match that. The plans compute clinical hours on a 15-week basis for every semester, so summer squeezes the same total into 10 or 11 weeks rather than lowering it.
Can I start summer clinical hours before the term begins?
No published Augusta University policy addresses clinic time logged before a summer course opens, so get your course faculty's answer in writing before you schedule anything ahead of mid-May. Spring is still the right time to settle the preceptor, clear the site's onboarding and renew any compliance item that would lapse in June or July.
Is there a summer graduation at Augusta University?
The summer 2027 calendar lists graduation on August 4 with no commencement ceremony. The full-time NP plans end in spring with NURS 9192, so summer graduation matters mainly to students on other schedules, such as nurse anesthesia, whose last specialty practicum falls in the summer of year three.
Do university holidays pause summer clinical hours?
The calendar lists university closures for Memorial Day, Juneteenth and July 5, but Augusta University does not say whether clinical hours stop on those days, and clinics keep their own hours. Agree on it with your preceptor and faculty in advance, and count only the days you can actually attend when you plan the weekly load.
